LET’S TAP DANCE

I am offering Tap Dance 1.5 this summer. During the school year, I teach adult tap dance for Madison School and Community Recreation (MSCR). They only offer Tap 1 (very beginner) and Tap 2 (very advanced). There is a need for a class in between the two. If you are interested in attending, you do not have to be an MSCR student. I’m happy to teach anyone who wants to learn. If you already know a little basic tap, but want to get better, we want you.

Tap 1.5 will use the 6 weeks to break down more complex steps, give ample time and repetitions to get them in your muscle memory, increase your tempo and confidence with basic steps and, hopefully, the less basic steps too. We will not start from scratch (that’s Tap1), but I won’t throw you into the deep end of the pool yet either (that’s Tap 2).

Wednesdays, June 20 – July 24 (note this DOES include July 4th which falls on Wednesday this year)
6:45pm – 7:45pm
Kanopy Dance – 341 State Street, 2nd Floor
$42 for 6 weeks

Pay with cash or check the first night of class. If you’d like to pay online in advance, you can do so through the “Pay Now” button below (you won’t need a PayPal account; just choose pay with credit card).

WHY TAP 1.5?
Many of my students have done Tap 1 repeatedly. And that’s fine, but we’re in a situation now where brand new dancers are enrolling in a class where they’re far outnumbered by experienced dancers. That can be very intimidating for them. The only difference between many of my Tap 1 dancers and the Tap 2 dancers is the Tap 2s have more confidence (due to more experience/practice) and that allows them to increase their speed and accuracy. They don’t actually do anything Tap 1s physically can’t do. If you’re an MSCR student, doing TAP 1.5 does NOT obligate you to move up to Tap 2, but maybe it will make that prospect less scary.

WHY $42.00?
I tried to keep the pricing as close to MSCR pricing as possible and still charge enough to cover expenses to run the class (studios charge rent!). Just as an aside, MSCR classes have extremely low overhead so they can keep their rates low. A typical dance studio charges $15-$25 an hour (but also provide nicer facilities with A/C, stereo, etc.) Often when people start dance at a park & rec’ type program they get a very skewed perception of what classes typically cost.

WHY NOT MSCR OVER THE SUMMER?
I decided not to teach for MSCR over the summer because we would be at Hoyt Elementary School. I’ve seen my students slip and fall on the tile floors. They also kill my joints. Basically, it’s just a bad facility for tap dancing. Also we’d be stuck in the same Tap 1 and Tap 2 model with no chance to do an in-between level. So I’m going rogue just for the summer!
