New Year, Old You!

Did you used to dance? Or maybe not dance, but you’re a person who used to often try new things in general. Or maybe you simply used to get out of the house more. Sometimes getting going again is harder than starting from scratch because you’re holding onto baggage. You used to be or do whatever awesome thing, and then somehow you let it go. And you carry shame or embarrassment about that.

“I used to be able to kick over my head and now I can hardly touch my toes.”

“I used to make lots of friends, but now I never meet anyone new outside of work.”

“I used to fit in these pants. ‘Nuff said.”

Do you shame yourself for not being who you used to be? I can get disheartened like anybody. I used to dance competitively. I had super awesome leaps, non-stop pirouettes, splits in all directions, boundless energy. I also was a teenager with time to do nothing but dance. I’ve moved, changed career paths more than once, ended or started important relationships, etc. And to say any of that got in the way of my dance training is a serious understatement.

Sometimes Life Happens. And That’s Okay.

Sure, I’m bummed I’m not the dancer I was 20+ years ago as are all older dancers. But you know what? Being sort of that dancer is better than not being that dancer at all. Getting out of the house once in a while is better than always staying home. Learning something new once a year is better than never learning anything new for years on end. Don’t let embarrassment about how far you’ve backslid prevent you from starting to climb back up.

It’s a new year. Are you ready to rediscover the old you? If dance is a part of that journey, I commend you on getting (back) into the studio. My classes are a judgment-free zone. Your feelings of intimidation, embarrassment, shame, guilt, and self-deprecation can be left outside. Take a deep breath and walk in.

You are welcome here. Now let’s dance.
